When a wallet is created, the owner get a private and a public key. The public key allows someone to receive cryptocurrencies in his or her wallet, and the private key is needed to authorize transactions. The public address is a long piece of code, that is why it is compressed to a 26-35 alphanumeric characters long public key, which serves as the identifier of the wallet.
